Shenzhen Samii International Medical Center (The Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen) is a municipal general public hospital that integrates medical services, research, teaching, disease prevention, health maintenance and rehabilitation healthcare. Directly under the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission and constructed in accordance with the standards for Grade III Level A general hospitals, the hospital is a “Famous Hospital” project in the “Three Famous Program” of the health sector of Shenzhen Municipality. Since the hospital was established, it has been taking ”A Large General Hospital with Strong Neuroscience” as its target for disciplinary development, giving focus to Neuroscience with Neurosurgery at its core. The Neurosurgery specialty is going to encompass eight subspecialties, including Neuro-trauma, Neuro-oncology, Spinal Neurosurgery, Endovascular Neurosurgery, Interventional Neuroradiology, Functional Neurosurgery, Peripheral Nerve Surgery, and Pediatric Neurosurgery. In addition, specialties such as Neurology, Neuroimaging, Neuropathology, Neuro-ICU, and Neurorehabilitation will also be established. What’s more, the hospital is constructing its “2 in 1” Hybrid Operating Room (HOR) for Neurosurgery, which will be equipped with intraoperative DSA and MRI.

The hospital is named after Prof. Madjid Samii, a world renowned expert in Neurosurgery. Located at No.1 Jinniu West Road, Pingshan District, Shenzhen, the hospital covers a land area of 68,000 m² and a floor area of 137,000 m² in its Stage I facilities. The hospital enjoys a beautiful environment with a roof garden inhabited by singing birds and fragrant flowers and a fish pond with fishes swimming around in the green rippling water. With green plants, fresh air, and a clean, bright, cozy and comfortable environment, the hospital is an eco-friendly hospital. Adhering to the “patient-centered” approach, the hospital provides humanistic medical care and quality services. Also, it has been actively conducting multidisciplinary pain management (pMDT) and promoting the painless care with the human touch in every effort.

Prof. Madjid Samii is an internationally renowned German neurosurgeon, Honorary President for Life of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), President of the International Neuroscience Institute (INI), and founder of the German International Innovative Medical Solutions (IIMS). He is the first foreign neurosurgeon who received a permanent license to practice medicine in China, a winner of the “Friendship Award” conferred by the Chinese government, and an “Honorary Citizen of Shenzhen.” For more than 30 years, he has trained a total of more than 1,000 neurosurgeons for China, conducted free surgeries for Chinese patients with refractory diseases, and made remarkable contributions to the improvement of the research, diagnosis and treatment level of Neurosurgery of China. WFNS has named a medal of honor after Prof. Madjid Samii and awards the medal to those who are engaged in the field of Neurosurgery and have made great contributions to the field as the highest honor.

Promoting the spirit of “daring to try and daring to pioneer” of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the hospital is the first and so far the only public hospital jointly operated by Chinese and foreign sides in China. The hospital has deep cooperation with the team led by Prof. Madjid Samii and is operated through collaboration with the German International Innovative Medical Solutions (IIMS). With a foreign national who has rich experience in managing international hospitals as the Hospital Director, the hospital reasonably utilizes the advanced new modes and new concepts of Germany in the management of international hospitals, takes the lead in carrying out the hospital management system reform based on the non-permanent budgeted staffing system, and explores the implementation of the targets-based annual salary system and negotiation-based salary system.

Currently, the hospital has opened clinical and technological departments including Internal Medicine (Respiratory Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Gastroenterology, Neurology and Endocrinology), Surgery (Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Orthopedics and Urology), Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, E.N.T., Stomatology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, ICU, Diagnostic Laboratory, Health Maintenance Clinic, Medical Imaging, TCM, General Medicine, Medical Nutrition, etc. Departments including General Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Neonatology, Obstetrics, Nephrology, Thoracic Surgery, Family Planning, Psychology, etc. will be opened step by step to improve the hospital’s capacity in providing comprehensive medical services so as to meet the citizens’ needs for comprehensive medical services covering common diseases, frequently occurring diseases, rare diseases, and uncommon diseases.
